I’m always searching for the best. The best coffee, Indian food, Italian food, bike shop, smoked salmon, croissant, sushi, heavy-bottomed pots and pans, sandwich, Kalamata olive bread – you name it – I’m looking for it. The reason I’m on this unending search has nothing to do with being better than anybody or finding some cool, esoteric, future hot-spot, oh no. I’ve found that things I may not have appreciated that were created with a less apt attention to detail usually do not match up to their esteemed competitors.

Take the KitchenAid stand mixer, for example. Prices range from their bottom of the line Classic Series Base Model mixer with an 8-cup bowl at $239.99 all the way up to $545.99 for the Commercial Series with an 11 cup bowl. Either of these mixers, including the 11 other varieties in between, will most likely last you a lifetime. Now, if we shift our focus to the Sunbeam Stand Mixer available at Wal-Mart for $54.88 (on Amazon from $69.99-$99.99), while I can’t guarantee it will break the first time you try mixing bread or pasta dough (although, some have made that complaint) I can say that plenty who had purchased it had numerous complaints (read reviews here).

But, this isn’t about KitchenAid Stand Mixers or Sunbeam Stand Mixers. It’s about striving for perfection. It’s about staring planned obsolescence in the face and elbowing it in the nose. It’s about demanding things that will work forever because they should, because it’s better for the environment, and because that’s what we buy them for – to work and to last.

Okay, so a little bit of a tangent there. After all, most of my examples above had something to do with food. It’s the same concept, though slightly different. If we’re going to be in the business of doing something – ANYTHING – we should do it as well as we possibly can and if we don’t care enough about it to do it that well, then we should figure out what it is we want to do well and do it WELL.

So, part of this blog will be dedicated to finding the best food and drinks I can find, raving about them, urging others to try them, too, and then, I suppose, becoming jaded that too many people now enjoy them.
